A weed in a general sense is a plant that is considered by the user of the term to be a nuisance, and normally applied to unwanted plants in human-made settings such as gardens, lawns or agricultural areas, but also in parks, woods and other natural areas. More specifically, the term is often used to describe native or nonnative plants that grow and reproduce aggressively. Generally, a weed is a plant in an undesired place.

Weeds may be unwanted for a number of reasons: they might be unsightly, or crowd out or restrict light to more desirable plants or use limited nutrients from the soil. They can harbor and spread plant pathogens that infect and degrade the quality of crop or horticultural plants. Some weeds are a nuisance because they have thorns or prickles, some have chemicals that cause skin irritation or are hazardous if eaten, or have parts that come off and attach to fur or clothes.

The term weed in its general sense is a subjective one, without any classification value, since a "weed" is not a weed when growing where it belongs or is wanted. Indeed, a number of "weeds" have been used in gardens or other cultivated-plant settings. An example is the corncockle, Agrostemma, which was a common field weed exported from Europe along with wheat, but now sometimes grown as a garden plant.

Professor Richard C. Lewontin of Harvard University defines weeds as plants that create environmental conditions in which it cannot reproduce. He takes the example of pine trees that crowd out sunlight such that its own offspring cannot grow. Weeds continue to exist, because the environment is continually being disturbed to create open conditions for new generations, such as forest fires and human activity.

What kind of weed control should I use on my newly-seeded lawn?
Q. I just re-seeded a section of yard, which was bare, with Kentucky bluegrass seed. It is coming up nicely, except for the broadleaf weeds! Is there anything I can treat the new lawn with, that will kill the weeds and not the grass? I'm finding Bishops Weed, Dandelion, Sorrell, Lambsquarters, and Thistle coming up with my Kentucky Bluegrass.

A. wait at least four mowings to do anything. Also a good idea is to wait a good month to six weeks. Personally i would get down and pick the weeds by hand. Might think i am crazy but i live on a few acres and one of them has grass. I get out every spring and pull all the creeping jenny by hand

How do I start a vegetable garden in a weed infested area?
Q. We have a 20 x 50 foot area for a vegetable garden. It has a ton of weeds. This Spring we used a hoe, cut down the weeds, pulled a ton of them then sprayed weed killer on top. Now it's mid-Summer and the weeds are taking over again. What can I do?

A. If you choose to put weed killer down again you have to wait a couple of weeks before you plant your garden. Tis better to plow with tractor or till the area then rake out what has come loose and pull up the rest. If you will till just before winter you will bring alot of the weed seed and roots to the surface and the winter will kill them off. plow again in early spring and rake and pull. When you put the garden in lay newspaper in several thicknesses between each row. keeps weeds down and can be plowed into ground in the fall. A garden is constant up keep. We are in our garden almost everyday when it is growing-tilling between rows, pulling weeds, hoeing, or harvesting. Great exercise. You might want to cut your space down a little if… [cont.]

How long does it take a weed wacker to start easier after the inital start?
Q. I bought a Troy-Bilt weed wacker model #TB525CS on July 21st and used it immediately that day and it took about 7 pulls to get started and tried to start it up today and it took about 9 pulls to get it started and would crank in the half choke position only, and the store said it's just the inital period of breaking it in. It was made in 06-09 so its a newer model.

A. I'd say you got flat out lied to. I've never had a problem starting new equipment. It's usually quite the opposite. When a piece of equipment is new everything should be working just about as well as it ever will (spark plug is fresh and un-corroded, filters and muffler are all clean, no carbon built up in the cylinder, etc...). So it should start the easiest it ever will. Yes there is a break in period but that shouldn't affect how it starts. Makes you wonder if it's really brand new or if it was a trade in or something similar and was just cleaned up and put back out on the sales floor. I'd ask some very pointed questions if I was you, and if you aren't satisfied with the answers return the trimmer and take your business down… [cont.]
