Temperature is the measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in a substance, which is related to how hot or cold that substance is.

Historically, two equivalent concepts of temperature have developed, the thermodynamic description and a microscopic explanation based on statistical physics. Since thermodynamics deals entirely with macroscopic measurements, the thermodynamic definition of temperature, first stated by Lord Kelvin, is stated entirely in empirical, measurable variables. Statistical physics provides a deeper understanding of thermodynamics by describing matter as a collection of a large number of particles, and derives thermodynamic (i.e. macroscopic) parameters as statistical averages of the microscopic parameters of the particles.

In statistical physics, it is shown that the thermodynamic definition of temperature can be interpreted as a measure of the average energy in each degree of freedom of the particles in the thermodynamic system. Because its temperature is seen as a statistical property, a system must contain a large number of particles for temperature to have a useful meaning. For a solid, this energy is found primarily in the vibrations of its atoms about their equilibrium positions. In an ideal monatomic gas, energy is found in the translational motions of the particles; with molecular gases, vibrational and rotational motions also provide thermodynamic degrees of freedom.

Temperature is a physical property that underlies the common notions of hot and cold. Something that feels hotter generally has a higher temperature, though temperature is not a direct measurement of heat. Temperature is one of the principal parameters of thermodynamics. If no net heat flow occurs between two objects, the objects have the same temperature; otherwise, heat flows from the object with the higher temperature to the object with the lower one. This is a consequence of the laws of thermodynamics.

Temperature is measured with thermometers that may be calibrated to a variety of temperature scales. In most of the world (except for Belize, Myanmar, Liberia and the United States), the Celsius scale is used for most temperature measuring purposes. The entire scientific world (these countries included) measures temperature using the Celsius scale and thermodynamic temperature using the Kelvin scale, which is just the Celsius scale shifted downwards so that 0 K= −273.15 °C, or absolute zero. Many engineering fields in the U.S., notably high-tech and US federal specifications (civil and military), also use the Kelvin and Celsius scales. Other engineering fields in the U.S. also rely upon the Rankine scale (a shifted Fahrenheit scale) when working in thermodynamic-related disciplines such as combustion.

For a system in thermal equilibrium at a constant volume, temperature is thermodynamically defined in terms of its energy (E) and entropy (S) as:

When mixing salt and room temperature water, what happens to the temperature of the water?
Q. When you mixed room temperature salt and room temperature water, the mixture changed temperature. If you were to leave this mixture undisturbed for several hours, what would happen to the temperature? Please explain.

A. Actually The temperature goes down slightly as the NaCl dissolves and the crystal lattice breaks down to give Na+ ions and Cl- ions. If left for several hours the resulting solution would absorb energy from the surroundings to try and return to the initial room temperature.

What temperature should my refrigerator be set for?
Q. Rather than turning the dial 1-6 for cold - colder, I can set a specific temperature, but I realized that I don't know what specific temperature it should be set on.

A. I've studied for the food safety test required by the health dept. 45 degrees F (or 5 degrees Celsius) is adequate. Eggs must be shipped and stored at 45 degrees. Other tan frozen things nothing is kept at a cooler temp than eggs. 36-40 is pretty cold and some things might start icing up on you. For instance cream cheese is ruined if it is frozen. It gets a grainy quality and looses it's creaminess. It is unpleasant plain and it will ruin a cheese cake recipe. Frozen foods should be at -15 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees F, duh. . .

What is the right temperature for babies bath water and room temperature in Fahrenheit degrees?
Q. If you can provide links. I am looking for the room temperature and Bath water. I have heard different things such as wather from 91-97 degrees and room temperature from 68-70 degrees what about the babies bedroom temperature?

A. Babies have a more difficult time regulating their body temperatures than adults do. I usually test the water with my hand. It needs to be warm about 90 degrees F (32 degrees C), not hot. Never above 98 degrees, as that could cause the child's body temperature to rise. You also need to have the bathroom warmer than would be comfortable for you, around 70 to 72 degrees.
