A summary, synopsis, or recap is a shorter version of the original. Such a simplification highlights the major points from the much longer subject, such as a text, speech, film, or event. The purpose is to help the audience get the gist in a short period of time.

Written summary

This article contains instructions, advice, or how-to content. The purpose of Wikipedia is to present facts, not to train. Please help improve this article either by rewriting the how-to content or by moving it to Wikiversity or Wikibooks. (November 2009)

A written summary starts with a lead, including title, author, text type, and the main idea of the text. It has a clearly arranged structure and is written in a logical, chronological, and traceable manner. In contrast to a résumé or a review, a summary contains neither interpretation nor rating. Only the opinion of the original writer is reflected – paraphrased with new words without quotations from the text. Unlike a retelling, a summary has no dramatic structure and is written in present tense or historic present. Because summaries are significantly shorter than the original, minor facts have to be left out. However all major conclusions should remain. In summaries only indirect speech is used and depictions are avoided. Summaries of books or dissertations present the major facts in common scientific language and should be about from a half up to one page long.

How to write a summary

  • Read the text
  • Formulate the main statement
  • Reread the text and underline important ideas and arguments according to the main statement
  • Introduce the author and title of the work in the opening sentence
  • Mention the important facts in chronological order
  • Check that the summary reflects the original conclusion

How do I write a summary for a news article? And an overall summary of all the articles?
Q. I need to write 14 individual summaries for 14 different news articles article. Because these articles all have the same theme- human rights in china, i also have to write one big summary including stuff from the news articles about the theme (human rights). I already have all the news articles and i have highlighted all the main points in each article. What should my format be like and how long should the summaries be? It would also be helpful to know exactly how to write a summary. Thanks!

A. Your best bet would be to summarize the leads (first paragraph) of the stories. Or look at the first three paragraphs of the stories. That is generally what the crux of the story is about. You could summarize by writing something like, "Recent news reports about human rights in China show that ___" Focus on the main themes and highlight at least three points from the stories. Good luck.

A. The essence of a summary isn't asking your reader a question--it's asking one of yourself. What happens? Think of the who-what-when-where-why of journalism. Prospective readers will want to know who the story is about--intrepid detective, clumsly princess--and they will read your story if the who is someone they can identify with or care about. They want to know the what--the main gist of what happens--clumsy princess falls into fountain in Central Park. They will want to know where--Tibet, Los Angeles, Main Street USA. When does your story take place? Is this an old west shootout? A tale from the trenches of World War I? Why can be approached in many ways, but good stories are based on conflict of some sort. Why did the princess… [cont.]
