Social security primarily refers to a social insurance program providing social protection, or protection against socially recognized conditions, including poverty, old age, disability, unemployment and others. Social security may refer to:

  • social insurance, where people receive benefits or services in recognition of contributions to an insurance scheme. These services typically include provision for retirement pensions, disability insurance, survivor benefits and unemployment insurance.
  • income maintenance—mainly the distribution of cash in the event of interruption of employment, including retirement, disability and unemployment
  • services provided by administrations responsible for social security. In different countries this may include medical care, aspects of social work and even industrial relations.
  • More rarely, the term is also used to refer to basic security, a term roughly equivalent to access to basic necessities—things such as food, clothing, shelter, education and medical care.

How can social security be in jeopardy and using it for this war?
Q. Somethings rotten. I heard a Bush rep tell how they are using Social security to fund this war. Then I hear social security is going to fail because of lack of workers. They can not both be true. You can not have a surplus. Spend the surplus and then blame lack of workers and retiring workers on social security failing. If you take the mortgage payment and spend it on something else you can't blame your income or employer for not paying your mortgage. Where is the money going and can't they pay it back. In other words our government is to corrupt to trust with tax money. We can not trust them to use money for what it is intended.

A. The government has been using our Social Security contributions for decades. The funds will run out soon because there will be more money taken out than what's being put in by workers. We, young workers, should be putting pressure on our representatives to privitize social security. Our contributions would then be ours and the government couldn't spend it. EDIT: The money is going to other government programs. Who know where exactly. The spend like there's an infinite amount of money. Government gets its money from us. Our tax dollars fund the government. There's no way they could "pay it back" without taking more from us.

Economic Stimulus: Which social security number does the IRS use to determine the date it is sent?
Q. My husband and I filed jointly and will be getting an economic stimulus refund but we can't figure out which social security number determines when the money will be direct deposited. Anyone know how this is determined? Thanks for your help!

A. Economic stimulus payments will be issued according to the last two-digits of the main filer's Social Security number. For joint filers, the payments will go out based on the person listed first on the return. Payments will be made by either direct deposit or paper check, consistent with how people filed their 2007 tax return

How to verify social security number, if a person is illegal alien?
Q. Is there a way I can verify, for free, if a social security number is genuine or false?

A. There may be ways of doing that, but that doesn't even completely solve the problem if you had access to that anyway. Even if it is a legit SSN, that doesn't mean they didn't steal it, which happens all the time by illegal aliens as well as natural born citizens.
