Privatization is the incidence or process of transferring ownership of a business, enterprise, agency or public service from the public sector (the state or government) to the private sector (businesses that operate for a private profit) or to private non-profit organizations. In a broader sense, privatization refers to transfer of any government function to the private sector - including governmental functions like revenue collection and law enforcement. The term "privatization" also has been used to describe two unrelated transactions. The first is a buyout, by the majority owner, of all shares of a public corporation or holding company's stock, privatizing a publicly traded stock, and often described as private equity. The second is a demutualization of a mutual organization or cooperative to form a joint stock company. It seems to me that if privatization - generally sold as a free market alternative to the existing system - would have passed, there would be intense pressure on government to reflate asset prices and/or compensate people who've "lost" lots of money. Both the US government and the private sector has shown it cannot be trusted with our money. The government wastes it (S.S. is broke) and are not good at policing the private sector. Private sector has brought about it's downfall through greed. S.S. on the other hand does not pay enough for me and no-doubt others if you live in areas with a high cost of living. Privatization (with no regulations) would not factor in the tremendous amount of externalities involved. This would include social costs relating to overclearing. These costs are on a global scale and can in fact alter the course of human history. This means that those who profit from privatization would not even come close to bearing all the costs associated with their actions; those costs would be absorbed by mankind. The question specifies "economically and environmentally". From an economic point of view, external costs need to be considered. Environmentaly, privatization would provide incentives to make the situation much worse, not better.
