Poverty refers to the condition of not having the means to afford basic human needs such as clean water, nutrition, health care, clothing and shelter. This is also referred to as absolute poverty or destitution. Relative poverty is the condition of having fewer resources or less income than others within a society or country, or compared to worldwide averages. Before the industrial revolution, poverty had mostly been the norm. Poverty reduction has historically been a result of economic growth as increased levels of production, such as modern industrial technology, made more wealth available for those who were otherwise too poor to afford them. Also, investments in modernizing agriculture and increasing yields is considered the core of the antipoverty effort, given three-quarters of the world's poor are rural farmers. Today, continued economic development is constrained by the lack of economic freedoms. Economic liberalization includes extending property rights, especially to land, to the poor, and making financial services, notably savings, accessible. Inefficient institutions, corruption and political instability can also discourage investment. Aid and government support in health, education and infrastructure helps growth by increasing human and physical capital. From Wikipedia under the

Asked by Matthew - Sat Oct 13 12:35:30 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. No people are not programmed to live in poverty. the people that do live in poverty are always done by their choosing and they may be forced into it, and most people never get use to the conditions, and die from them or have ill health Answered by K.A.P - Sat Oct 13 12:42:16 2007 What is the average poverty rate in the United States? Q. I heard yesterday that the city I live in has a poverty rate of 25%. I was wondering what the average poverty rate is for the United States? Is there anywhere online I can go to look at poverty rates for average American cities? Asked by starfishblues - Wed Nov 8 13:52:42 2006 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. It is roughly 12.5 percent. Whatever city you are in has a much higher poverty rate than the majority of the USA. Those living in the USA on poverty are much much much better off however than those counterparts below poverty rates in many other countries. Poverty in USA means not having 2 tv's and not having an air conditioning or not affording to buy beer. Poverty in other countries is when you have to work a 12 hour shift to get $1 . ***Check out this website for evidence of what i just said...(Secure White American is from America i wonder???) Answered by Rachel - Wed Nov 8 14:03:47 2006 What percentage of men and children in the world live in poverty?
Q. I often hear that the majority of people in poverty are 'women and children'. I'm curious if anyone has any information for the number of 'men and children' who live in poverty. I have a suspicion it would be the majority of people in poverty as well. Ginger, thank you for avoiding the question. Ginger, if you look to the answer above yours, it mentions statistics, answers the question about men living in poverty - and doesn't go off on a tirade, either. Asked by Blah - Fri Oct 24 22:25:14 2008 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. "In the majority of cases depth of poverty is smaller among women than among men. It seems, then, that the poverty of European women is, in general, somewhat greater than the poverty of men, but the position of poor women is less severe then men living below the poverty threshold" (really agree with this statement and this seems to be the case in the US as well) Scoll down has several graphs...for the greater European area/counties. Women comprise 56% of Americans over 18 who live in poverty...So that would be 44% are men...as far as legal adults. Raw numbers are here.. I'm having a hard time finding international "raw" clear cut (either no real info, or way to much) numbers by gender... Answered by Untamed Rose - Fri Oct 24 23:02:15 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Poverty" Poverty is a state in which an individual, group, or population lack essential elements of life within their societies. This usually has the connotation of a lack of basic survival items like food, clothing, shelter, and health care, or the financial means to obtain these, but can also mean having less tangible problems like social exclusion, dependency, and the ability to participate in society. Its exact meaning varies considerably with context and the social environments involved. ContentsSourced
