London ( / ˈ l ʌ n d ən /) is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom (UK). It is Britain's most populous and Europe's second most populous metropolitan area. A major settlement for two millennia, its history goes back to its founding by the Romans, who called it Londinium. London's core, the ancient City of London, or the 'square mile' financial district, largely retains its mediaeval boundaries. Since at least the 19th century, the name "London" has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. In modern times, the bulk of this conurbation forms the London region and the Greater London administrative area, with its own elected mayor and assembly. London is a leading global city, the world's largest financial centre alongside New York, and has the largest city GDP in Europe. Central London is home to the headquarters of most of the UK's top 100 listed companies (the FTSE 100) and more than 100 of Europe's 500 largest. London's influence and strengths in the arts, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, politics, professional services, sports, tourism, transport and culture in general all contribute to its global position. It is the most visited city in the world. London hosted the 1908 and 1948 Summer Olympics and will host the 2012 Summer Olympics. London contains four World Heritage Sites: the Tower of London; the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; the site comprising the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and St. Margaret's Church; and the historic settlement of Greenwich (in which the Royal Observatory marks the Greenwich Meridian (0° longitude) and GMT). London has a diverse range of peoples, cultures and religions, and more than 300 languages are spoken within its boundaries. In July 2007 it had an official population of 7,556,900 within the boundaries of Greater London, making it the most populous municipality in the European Union. The Greater London Urban Area (the second largest in the EU) has a population of 8,278,251. while the metropolitan area (the largest in the EU) has an estimated total population of between 12 million and 14 million. The London Underground network, administered by Transport for London, is the oldest underground railway network in the world and the most extensive after the Shanghai Metro. London Heathrow Airport is the world's busiest airport by number of international passengers and the airspace is the busiest of any urban centre in the world. From Wikipedia under the

There are so many different places offering this type of courses here in London that I feel overwhelmed. So please help me! I live in the north London area (Finchley), but I wouldn't mind having to go to central London, or a place some 15 miles from here. As long as it's worth it I don't mind. Our family (with 22-month-old girl) will be in London visiting family for the last week in May. Any suggestions for fun things to do in London with the kid? We'd also love to do some day trips by train. Thanks! Asked by jem - Sun Apr 6 17:31:54 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Check the following official family links - maybe they have something for you. many of the museums and galleries in London offer special entertainment for kids, but I don't know if they have something fo someone that young - check out their websites, starting with the National Gallery. I must admit that I cannot really judge on the attention span and interests of a 2 year old. I suggest: London Zoo; Natural History Museum. Also the parks or a journey to Kew Gardens; avoid Madame Tussauds! For day-trips: anything with a beach; also the Royal Pavillion in Brighton. Answered by subst99 - Sun Apr 6 21:18:29 2008 How much money need I take to London for a one-week long trip?
Q. I am planning on visiting London this year in September for one, maybe two, weeks and I want to do all the touristy stuff and see London's main interest points. Also, I would very much like to go see some good theatre plays, museums, have fun at night in a decent club etc. What is an approximate sum of money I would need to take with me? I don't know how much you were thinking but to do London properly you are going to need 1000+ in easy money to see you through a week. Typical museums that you will be going to such as The Tower of London/London Dungeons cost around 20 each. A West End show will cost around 40- 80. If you are thinking budget there is of course lots of cheaper options - free museums include the Imperial War Museum, Victoria and Albert, National Gallery, Science Museum - all of which are great museums. Travel isn't bad - for just 9/10 a day you can get an all day travelcard which gives you unlimited access to tube and buses - this will get you anywhere you need to go in London.
