Homelessness is the condition and social category of people without a regular house or dwelling because they cannot afford, do not desire, or are otherwise unable to maintain regular, safe, and adequate housing, or lack "fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence." The actual legal definition varies from country to country, or among different entities or institutions in the same country or region. The term homelessness may also include people whose primary night time residence is in a homeless shelter, in an institution that provides a temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized, or in a public or private place not designed for use as a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings. The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) defines a "chronically homeless" person as "an unaccompanied homeless individual with a disabling condition who has either been continuously homeless for a year or more, or has had at least four episodes of homelessness in the past three years." Although we do have some people who are homeless, homelessness is not a big problem in Canada. Probably something like less than 2% of the country's population are homeless. You can take pictures of seashores and cities if you don't want to go to the mountains. Homelessness matters to all. I was not raised to know anyone homeless or to expect it to happen to me but it did. And unlike what most people think I have a job. I am female and I live in a shelter for women. I have lived there for seven years and what I have seen!!! Blows my mind. 1. Most women who become homeless were sexual victims at one point in their life. 2. This is obvious to all the women in the shelter: lack of support is actually the #1 reason for women becoming homeless. Either family support is unable due to them (the family) being financially, mentally, or medically unstable or else outright cruel, like domestic violence. 3.
