In physics and thermodynamics, heat is the process of energy transfer from one body or system to another due to thermal contact, which in turn is defined as an energy transfer to a body in any other way than due to work performed on the body.

A related term is thermal energy, loosely defined as the energy of a body that increases with its temperature. Heat is also loosely referred to as thermal energy, although many definitions require this thermal energy to actually be in the process of movement between one body and another to be technically called heat (otherwise, many sources prefer to continue to refer to the static quantity as "thermal energy").

Energy transfer by heat can occur between objects by radiation, conduction and convection. Energy can only be transferred by heat between objects - or areas within an object - with different temperatures (as given by the zeroth law of thermodynamics). This transfer happens spontaneously only in the direction of the colder body (as per the second law of thermodynamics). The transfer of energy by heat from one object to another object with an equal or higher temperature can happen only with the aid of a heat pump via mechanical work or by using mirrors or lenses to focus radiation which thereby increase its energy flux density.

Can it damage your heating system to just heat one zone of your house?
Q. I am currently the only resident of a fairly large 4 zone house heated by oil. There are 2 floors with a 2 thermostats on each floor. The furnace is in the basement. I only live in one zone of the house so I only heat that one to save money(to about 67 degrees F). The other zones I keep at like 50 degrees F. Would this damage my heating system at all because they're not designed to be used this way? Dubidioche what are the registers?
Asked by Jane - Sun Nov 1 18:13:03 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As long as you aren't restricting air flow by closing all of the registers then you are fine. Registers are the slotted air outlets/vents in the floor. They can usually be adjusted open-closed and it is not good to close off several and restrict air flow.

What is the specific heat capacity of the metal?
Q. A 10.0 g piece of metal at 100 C is transferred to a calorimeter containing 50.0 mL of water initially at is 25.0 C. Calculate the specific heat capacity of the metal if the heat the heat capacity of the calorimeter Ccal is 25.0 J/ K. The final temperature, Tfinal is 25.6 C.
Asked by hawksup2 - Sat Nov 1 22:46:16 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The heat lost by the metal = the heat absorbed by the water + calorimeter. Heat absorbed by water = mass H2O x sp.ht. H2O x delta T = (50.0 g)(4.184 J/g K)(25.6 - 25.0) = 126 J Heat absorbed by calorimeter = Cp x delta T = (25.0 J/K)(25.6 - 25.0) = 15 J Total heat absorbed by water + calorimeter = 126 + 15 = 141 J = heat lost by metal Heat lost by metal = mass metal x sp.ht. metal x delta T = (10.0 g)(sp. ht. metal)(100 - 25.6) = 744 x sp.ht. metal 141 = 744 x sp.ht. metal 141 / 744 = sp.ht. metal = 0.190 J/g K I have assumed that the density of water = 1.00 g/mL (so that 50 mL = 50 g). Also, delta T in Celsius is the same as delta T in Kelvins.

Does heat shrink window plastic work to conserve energy?
Q. I am talking about the stuff you tape to the inside of your home windows and use a hair dryer to stretch it tight. It is supposed to keep single pane windows better at keeping in the heat. I live where it gets 30 degrees at night and 40-50 during the day in winter. Does anyone have experience with these products? Which type works best? Mainly, does it really keep heat in? OR does it keep sunlight heat out and balance out to zero help?
Asked by Keith B - Mon Oct 8 16:29:50 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes it can make a HUGE difference. In college, I lived in an old drafty house with 6 other friends. Our heating bills were astronomical and you could literally feel the wind blowing through the windows! We shrink-wrapped the windows and immediately noticed a change in the temperature in the rooms. Our heating bills dropped by 30% over one month. Windows typically account for 10-20% of the heat loss in a house. Even if you have double-pane windows, they still get cold, leeching heat out of your room. The plastic sheeting will help by creating a partial vacuum between the window and the plastic which acts as an insulator (this is the same principle those old metal & glass thermos bottles use.) This helps keep the heat in, and the… [cont.]

Heat is a 1995 film about two men, a professional thief planning a major bank robbery and the detective pursuing him. Although both are seemingly contrasting characters, over the course of the movie they discover a mutual understanding in their inability to stop "doing what they do".
