In physics, a force is any external agent that causes a change in the motion of a free body, or that causes stress in a fixed body. It can also be described by intuitive concepts such as a push or pull that can cause an object with mass to change its velocity (which includes to begin moving from a state of rest), i.e., to accelerate, or which can cause a flexible object to deform. Force has both magnitude and direction, making it a vector quantity. Newton's second law states that an object with a constant mass will accelerate in proportion to the net force acting upon and in inverse proportion to its mass. Equivalently, the net force on an object equals the rate at which its momentum changes. See also thrust.

Forces acting on three-dimensional objects may also cause them to rotate or deform, or result in a change in pressure or even change volume in some cases. The tendency of a force to cause changes in rotational speed about an axis is called torque. Deformation and pressure are the result of stress forces within an object.

Since antiquity, scientists have used the concept of force in the study of stationary and moving objects. However, descriptions of forces by Aristotle incorporated fundamental misunderstandings, which, despite advances made by the third century BC philosopher Archimedes from studies of simple machines, persisted for many centuries. By the seventeenth century, Sir Isaac Newton corrected these misunderstandings with mathematical insight that remained unchanged for nearly three hundred years. By the early 20th century, Einstein in his theory of general relativity successfully predicted relativistic adjustments to Newton's model for gravity by ushering in the concept of a space-time continuum.

The recent theory of particle physics known as the Standard Model associates forces at the level of quantum mechanics. The Standard Model predicts that exchange particles called gauge bosons are the fundamental means by which forces are emitted and absorbed. Only four main interactions are known: in order of decreasing strength, they are: strong, electromagnetic, weak, and gravitational. High-energy particle physics observations made during the 1970s and 1980s confirmed that the weak and electromagnetic forces are expressions of a more fundamental electroweak interaction.

How does inward force of gravity overcome outward force of radiation pressure during the end of a star's life?
Q. Choose only ONE: a. As the star gets bigger, the force of gravity also gets bigger, while the radiation pressure stays the same. b. The star fuses more hydrogen as it gets near the end of its life, then the fusion of hydrogen is converted to gravity. c. Near the end of its life, a star runs out of hydrogen to fuse, and fusion is what creates the radiation pressure. d. Gravity increases with time, so the older a star gets, the more it is affected by the force of gravity.

Is Air Force ROTC the best route in becoming a commercial pilot?
Q. I am pursuing a career as a commercial airline pilot. Ive heard that Air Force ROTC is a good choice in pursuing it, but, is it the best? Should i join the reserves and attend college? Should i do both? Is Pilot school the way to go instead of Military? Just a sidenote, i do not want to become an air force pilot.

A. If you can meet the standards to be an air force pilot, why not do it for awhile? You can always leave when the airlines are profitable again...but who knows when that will be. They are not going to be hiring for quite some time, nor will you make money as an airline pilot.

How does centrifugal force work in space?
Q. In so many movies and books, gravity is simulated in space with centrifugal force. I don 't exactly understand how that would work. I understand it's the concept of the friction of the floor pulling you and causing you to gain inertia and move with the platform, but before you touched a surface, wouldn't you just be "floating" there as the station would spin around you? (This is assuming the station is in orbit). Or, for example in 2001, the Jupiter 1 had a spinning platform that allowed an astronaut to run. What forces him back to the floor after he pushes off?
Asked by Oleander - Tue Jul 15 15:46:44 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. 1) To keep something going in a circle rather than a straight line requires a centripetal acceleration pointing inward. 2) If you are in an accelerating reference frame, you feel an acceleration (and hence a force) equal and opposite the acceleration of the frame--we call this a pseudoforce. If you brake, it pushes you forward in your car. If you accelerate, it pushes you back in your seat. 3) Therefore, if your reference frame is rotating, you feel an outward push called the centrifugal force. If your car turns left, it pushes you right. And in the big spinning tube, it could approximate gravity well enough to let you go for a run.
