Escape

Should we teach children to try to escape from kidnappers, or would that be dangerous?
Q. Everyone is talking about the fact that Shawn Hornbeck, who was kidnapped and held captive for several years, seemingly could have escaped but did not. Should we teach our children to escape in a situation where they think they have an opportunity to escape, or should we teach them to cooperate? Of course, we would like to be able to see the situation and make the decision ourselves, as parents, whether an escape opportunity is safe or not. But we can't do that. So what should we tell our kids to help them make this decision on their own?

A. I would want my child to escape if possible. I'll teach my children that these predators lie to them to get them to stay.

What makes light not be able to escape a black hole?
Q. I've read over and over again that nothing travels faster than the speed of light. My question is this: if the force of a black hole is so strong that not even light can escape it, then might that mean that whatever "force" in the black hole travels faster than light itself? Forgive me for not fully researching before I ask... I know the answer's probably just a google away, but it's always cool to get opinions from real people. Thanks!

A. the answer is that gravity doesnt really have a speed. its like the earth or anything else with a large mass. everything has escape velocity, you have to be going so fast to escape the gravity of an object. so the gravity of a black hole is so strong not even light can escape it. think of gravity like a trampoline. if you place a bowling ball in the middle it sags, so any thing else on it rolls towards it. and something has to have a certain amount of speed to be able to roll back up the slope thats created by it. so basically a black hole has so much gravity that there isn't even a slope, its like a wall instead of a hill, you can always climb up a hill (the more steep the more effort, same with gravity) but you've gotta be pretty… [cont.]

during aircraft disorder of flight do thy permit the air passenger to use guided parachutes to escape?
Q. IN an sudden exploading calamity of the aircraft there may not be much time to take up the excercise of use of .parachute escape. there could be situation where the time to escape is sufficient an attempt, could be made by parachute escape. why such a news is not heard . even paragliding wonderful as a guided oneto escape.

A. Although individual parachutes are not feasible for airline travel there is a company that is developing what's called airframe parachutes. Basically a parachute attached to the structure of the aircraft to allow the entire aircraft to descend "softly" to the ground. They are currently seen on cirrus piston aircraft and retrofits for Cessna 172/182s and also experimentals. The current models however only can handle very slow deployment speeds and aircraft weights. There are parachutes being developed for heavier, faster aircraft such as cirrus' new "Jet" and Diamonds D-Jet. Whether we someday see airframe chutes on commercial airplanes is yet to be seen and many years off due to the high loads they'll have to be designed to handle.
