Q. Yes, the metrics indicate that violence is down. Does anyone seriously believe that this is a sustainable state of affairs in a country and region where religion and self/family/tribe always have and always will trump nationalism. My sense is that as soon as the Americans leave (they have to, they are on the verge of getting kicked out, none too politely either), things will go back to chaos and eventually, either a religious order or a dictator will take over. Now, troops are staying put and making sure insurgents don't come back. And while this violence is down, we are training Iraqi Police (IP) so that they can take over when we're gone.
