An atmosphere (from Greek ἀτμός - atmos "vapor" and σφαῖρα - sphaira "sphere") is a layer of gases that may surround a material body of sufficient mass, by the gravity of the body, and are retained for a longer duration if gravity is high and the atmosphere's temperature is low. Some planets consist mainly of various gases, but only their outer layer is their atmosphere (see gas giants).

The term stellar atmosphere describes the outer region of a star, and typically includes the portion starting from the opaque photosphere outwards. Relatively low-temperature stars may form compound molecules in their outer atmosphere. Earth's atmosphere, which contains oxygen used by most organisms for respiration and carbon dioxide used by plants, algae and cyanobacteria for photosynthesis, also protects living organisms from genetic damage by solar ultraviolet radiation. Its current composition is the product of billions of years of biochemical modification of the paleoatmosphere by living organisms.

What is the cause of atmospheric circulation and ocean currents?
Q. Explain the causes of atmospheric circulation and oceanic currents. How do ocean current influence the atmosphere in terms of weather and climate?
Asked by Victoria F - Fri Feb 27 03:19:56 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Wind is caused by the uneven heating of the earth's surface causing high and low pressure zones. Air under high pressure will naturally try to escape to areas of low pressure and that's how air moves about. Ocean currents are very complicated and rely on a number of things. But as far as I remember currents are dependent on the mixing of cold and warm water, due to changing atmospheric conditions between the coast and the middle of the ocean. Tides and the gravitational pull of the moon/sun could have a smaller part to play as well. Wind also plays a big role in the surface movement of water. But we all know that ocean currents can go quite deep and can sometimes even be a result of inter-strata mixing in some cases.

How do I measure the amount of work exerted on an item by atmospheric pressure in Joules?
Q. I am conducting a science fair experament on if weather affects the amount of work done on a soda can by atmospheric pressure. Im using the formula for kinetic energy but im not sure if thats right.

A. That seems like an odd experiment, and I'm not entirely sure the atmosphere will do any work on a soda can, not to mention the equations will be awfully complicated, and you'll probably need a lot of equipment to measure the deformations. But, yeah, kinetic energy will not work, because the soda can shouldn't have any momentum. However, pressure times area will result in a force. Force time distance equals work. So, just calculate the force on the top of the can, and the force on the sides, and then measure (you're gonna a strain gauge... I hope you're in college) the deformation on the can, and then you can find work. All of this is ignoring interal pressure (I'm not sure if it's negligible). Long story short, I'm almost finished… [cont.]

TRUE OR FALSE on some atmospheric soundings, it is sometimes possible to have more than one tropopause recorde?
Q. on some atmospheric soundings, it is sometimes possible to have more than one tropopause recorded?
Asked by Christy - Wed Jan 13 01:11:19 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The answer is No, by definition: the tropopause is the *lowest* level at which the lapse rate decreases to 2 C/km or less, provided that the average lapse rate between this level and all higher levels within 2 km does not exceed 2 C/km.
