An atmosphere (from Greek ἀτμός - atmos "vapor" and σφαῖρα - sphaira "sphere") is a layer of gases that may surround a material body of sufficient mass, and that is held in place by the gravity of the body. An atmosphere may be retained for a longer duration, if the gravity is high and the atmosphere's temperature is low. Some planets consist mainly of various gases, but only their outer layer is their atmosphere (see gas giants).

The term stellar atmosphere describes the outer region of a star, and typically includes the portion starting from the opaque photosphere outwards. Relatively low-temperature stars may form compound molecules in their outer atmosphere. Earth's atmosphere, which contains oxygen used by most organisms for respiration and carbon dioxide used by plants, algae and cyanobacteria for photosynthesis, also protects living organisms from genetic damage by solar ultraviolet radiation. Its current composition is the product of billions of years of biochemical modification of the paleoatmosphere by living organisms.

What is the difference in atmospheric travel and that of space?
Q. I need to understand the basic concept of the difference between atmospheric travel and space travel. It may include vehicle design, forces, time frames, acceleration, etc. . Helpful topics might be: Lift, Thrust, Drag, Gravity are terms you should investigate Newton's Theory of Relativity Konstantin Tsiolkovsky Robert Goddard Sputnik 1 Laika Explorer 1 NASA - transport design zyes this is for a class. this is the question that was given to me exactly. i have been looking for answers for 2 days. This is not my topic of knowledge, so I decided to put it on here< for some help from people that might know than me about this topic!!

A. In the atmosphere (any atmosphere), you need to consider 4 properties: Thrust, Drag, Lift, and Weight. The vehicle must be aerodynamic to eliminate as much drag as possible. Tear-drop shapes are about the best shapes to for this. You need to make the vehicle light in weight, so that the lift the vehicle generates (either with wings, or by body shape) is enough to overcome weight at certain speeds. To generate those speeds, you need to have minimum thrust (either a rocket, jet, or prop engine). All planes, helicopters, birds, and people in hang gliders have to balance these 4 forces in order to fly. In space, the shape of the vehicle doesn't matter. Look at the Lunar Module the astronauts landed on the moon with - a very… [cont.]

Photosynthetic bacteria are present in leguminous plants and convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form that is?
Q. Photosynthetic bacteria are present in leguminous plants and convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form that is usable by the plants. true or false? I am very stuck and am finding little on the internet about leguminous plants and what they do. Any help would be appreciated :) Thanks.

A. No, photosynthetic bacteria is not present in leguminous plants. Its a free leaving bacteria. The bacteria found in leguminous roots, forming root nodules is called Rhizobium sp. Its symbiosis with the leguminous plants such as soybean, peanut, etc. This species of bacteria can convert the nitrogen in the air and turned it to nitrate (NO3 or NH4. There are also free leaving bacteria that are capable of converting atmospheric nitrogen to NO3. Among them are Azotobacter, Pennibacilus, etc.

Are there any good websites that predict atmospheric seeing conditions?
Q. I live in Memphis,TN. Often times, I drive way out into the country only to be disappointed by the unexpected arrival of clouds or by just plain bad atmospheric seeing conditions. Are there any good websites for astronomers that estimate what seeing conditions will be like for a particular area at a particular time?
