The social sciences are the fields of academic scholarship which explore aspects of human society. Social sciences may draw upon empirical methods and attempt to emulate the standards of conventional scientific practice. By contrast, other social scientists employ critical analysis or hermeneutic methods to study objects of enquiry they regard as inconsistent with the conventional approach.

Social science is commonly used as an umbrella term to refer to a plurality of fields outside of the natural sciences. These fields include: anthropology, archaeology, comparative musicology, communication studies, cultural studies, demography, economics, history, human geography, international development, international relations, linguistics, media studies, philology, political science, psychology (at least in part), social work and sociology.

The term may be used, however, in the specific context of referring to the original sciences of society established in 19th century sociology. Émile Durkheim, Karl Marx and Max Weber are typically cited as the principal architects of modern social science by this definition. Positivist sociologists attempt to emulate the natural sciences as a model for understanding society, and so define "science" in its stricter modern sense. Antipositivists, by contrast, use social critique or symbolic interpretation rather than raw empirical observation, and thus treat "science" in its broader, classical sense. In modern academic practice theorists are often eclectic, using multiple methodologies. In the terms of sociologists Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann, social scientists seek an understanding of the Social Construction of Reality.

Are sociology and the social sciences closely related or not even close?
Q. I am researching a graduate program called "MA in Social Sciences" and I'm interested in a PhD in Sociology later on. Do you think I can get into a PhD in Sociology program with an MA in Social Sciences or not?
Asked by ~Bree~ - Mon Sep 14 13:12:43 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes because sociology is a social science and many elements of sociology cross over with other social science subjects such as psychology, history and research methods etc albeit people tend to be either good at sociology or psychology and not necessarily them both.

Can I get any jobs with an Associate's degree in social sciences?
Q. I am about to get my associate's degree in social science and am trying to figure out if it will open up any new job opportunities. I absolutely plan on continuing my education but would like to see if there are any job possibilities for someone with an associate's. Thanks for you help.

A. Yes you could get a degree in Substance abuse counseling, which is a 2 year degree. I have a bachelors degree in Psychology though and it doesn't go far. In order to be a therapist I would need to go back to school for 2 years to get a master's degree. However when you get a specific 2 year degree then it seems to really count. If you really want an excellent degree at the 2 year level, go with something medical. It pays very well, is very respected, and goes far in today's tough job market. Things like: physical therapy assistant, dental hygiene, emergency medical services, health information management, nursing, radiation oncology, radiography, phlebotomy, medical laboratory tech, sleep technologist, respiratory therapist.
