The social sciences are the fields of academic scholarship that explore aspects of human society. "Social science" is commonly used as an umbrella term to refer to a plurality of fields outside of the natural sciences. These include: anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, linguistics, political science, international studies and, in some contexts, psychology. Subjects such as international relations and social work are concerned primarily with application and do not constitute social sciences per se. The term may be used, however, in the specific context of referring to the original science of society established in 19th century sociology. Émile Durkheim, Karl Marx and Max Weber are typically cited as the principal architects of modern social science by this definition. Positivist social scientists use methods resembling those of the natural sciences as tools for understanding society, and so define science in its stricter modern sense. Interpretivist social scientists, by contrast, may use social critique or symbolic interpretation rather than constructing empirically falsifiable theories, and thus treat science in its broader, classical sense. In modern academic practice researchers are often eclectic, using multiple methodologies (for instance, by combining quantitative and qualitative techniques). Social sciences are less respected and valued than conventional sciences because conventional sciences improve technology which contributes to the economy in a very capitalist/money generating way - where as social sciences do not (or not nearly as fast). Our capitalist society emphasizes technology and money - therefore biochemistry (think drugs), engineering (think property and building), physics (think space travel and research), etc. are primary go-getters. Q. Why should one insist that Social knowledge has to be Scientific? science is based on the knowledge of causal connection, and strictly speaking, there is no scientificity in Social Sciences. To be sure, there are scientific disciplines within social science. For instance, social network analysis is a mathematical science and a normal science the same way calculus or physics are a normal sciences. There exists an agreed upon set of precepts and innovations within the discipline and most contributions build on the most recent, thus are linear.
