Best degree to find work in aid work/development?
Q. I'm interested in getting a job as an aid worker, or some posting in development work. What do you think the best degree for this would be? In the UK several universities do degrees in International Development, and Development Studies. Would these degrees be respected in this field or would I be better off with a more traditional degree like Anthopology or International Relations? Cheers

A. You would probably best doing a dual subject degree combining a language and international development. But to be completely honest languages at Uni are a lot of work and if you are not naturally good with languages then it might be too much to take on. I imagine combining international development and international relations would be fascinating and would definitely give you an edge over peers with only one or the other.

Development aid has only made countries and people poorer, why not stop it?
Q. Some 50 years of shoveling billions of $$$ in development aid in Africa and they only seem to get poorer and poorer. Why don't we stop it? It is quite clear that development aid does not work. So what does work? Eastern Asia opened up it's markets and has become significantly better for it. It is time that trade barriers and agricultural subsidies were removed. I don't feel guilty because Africans keep having/electing corrupt leaders.

A. Like your Question! This has been a pet hate of mine for years as I lived in Papua New Guinea for 20 years and could not believe the amount of aid which was poured into the place only to end up in the pockets of the politicians with no benefit to the people whatsoever. The surest way to combat this situation is to give tied aid which means that the recipient country must firstly put forward a program of works and then finance them one stage at a time so this makes it next to impossible to pocket the money. I find it utterly incredible that money can be thrown away in this way whilst some of our own people continue to live in poverty. I am a firm believer in the addage "give a man a fish and you feed him for a day - teach a man to fish and… [cont.]

A. if the other side of the debate is what the US is doing, then you drew the short straw - simply because it's much harder to account for what the EU does (I presume you mean the EU), since it consists of member countries who each give as they choose in addition to any that come from the EU as a whole.

Is foreign aid the solution to global poverty?
Q. A 2005 United Nations report called for a doubling of foreign aid to poor countries as the means to reduce poverty. Yet the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a for-profit microloan bank and its founder, an apparent vindication of the ideas of Peter T. Bauer, Henry Hazlitt, Deepak Lal, and others. As Bauer wrote, Development aid, far from being necessary to rescue poor societies from a vicious circle of poverty, is far more likely to keep them in that state. Emergence from poverty requires effort, firmly established property rights, and productive investment.

A. Econometric Data has shown that that public foreign aid (that is foreign aid that goes into the hands of government or some body of disbursement) per dollar is correlated to reduction in poverty, but that other factors make this relation weak. Levels of corruption, size and density of a country and other such factor are other such variables. The more effective foreign aid is private foreign aid (foreign aid that goes directly to the family units, usually in the form of remittances to the receiving family coming from their family from another country. This form of foreign aid has much greater effects per dollar than that of public foreign aid. If we speak just of public foreign aid in its current form, it is not an effective solution… [cont.]

What's an example of a country improving through the US aiding economic development?
Q. Is there a country today that is politically or economically successful because the United States provided economic aid or helped it develop its own industries? I'm looking for a country that started off backward and behind the rest of the world, but greatly improved because it used aid from the US (or NATO or even the UN) to develop its economy, industries, and infrastructure. Counterexamples would be a lot of the Persian Gulf countries, which take a lot of US aid, but only get rich off their natural resources (mostly oil).

A. Until today, I had the same feeling of despair. But today, when I see a 16 year old sking if he can eradicate poverty, I have got a new strength. A strength that makes me stand and say,"I can do it. " Or rather, "WE can do it!" Eradicating poverty is not easy. But neither is it impossible. You start at a micro level. People like myself will be more that happy to join and take the initiative. Remember, the thing starts at home so I have a course of action that you can follow: 1. Ask someone in your school to join hands with you and then you launch a campaign where you collect money. Now give this money on a loan, at a very reasonable rate of interest. Give it only for productive purposes. The people will buy equipment, for e.g. the women… [cont.]

A. First I think we must define what poverty is. Many of us think what makes us poor is when we don't the things that we want or that make our lives comfortable. The fact the what makes us poor is the inability to be self sufficient. The tragedy in New Orleans proved that. If you can't shelter yourself, feed yourself, protect yourself, educated yourself and pass on that knowledge you are poor. Most of us see tribal peoples in other nations as being dirt poor. The fact is these people possess knowledge of things the give them the most value possession of all, freedom. So what people need most of all to keep from being poor is education. We also need to change our system of values. Only people can keep themselves for being poor. If we… [cont.]

How can the developing countries avoid the "we know what is the best for you" sentiment of donors?
Q. The developing countries or the so-called third world depend on the direct or indirect development aid. The negative side of such aid is however, the donors trying to impose their own views in the economical and political activities of the countries they donate. They usually think that their strategies would develop those countries. The effect is totally contrary. Such countries develop conspiracy and corruption instead and devide themselves into different opinions which might afterwords develop in to civil war. I would say that those countries should be left alone to set their own development strategies relevant to their community and environment and based on their priorities and objectives and they should be encouraged for such. Will terror in Af-Pak areas go away with development or will assume nastier proportions with American aid?
Q. Perhaps terrorism in Afghanistan and Pakistan should not be equated with socio-political unrest in some other areas of this world where lack of development produces them. It's very likely that American dollars may add fuel to the fire because I'm of the opinion that it's mainly an attitudinal disease that narrows the vision (thereby excluding noble human values )and makes a nasty use of religion for it's sustenance.

Why would the USA government increase foreign aid/weapons trade since 9/11 rather than try and stop it?
Q. In times of crisis, like the tsunami that killed more than 100,000 people in the last days of 2004, the American people are very generous. And they assume their government is as well. While the United States doles out billions in foreign aid every year, Washington tends to favor military aid and weapons sales over other forms of aid, deprioritizing humanitarian, health or development aid, even though these types of foreign aid have long-term constructive impact. Since the beginning of the war on terrorism, foreign military aid has increased precipitously. The Pentagon s largest military aid program, the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program, increased by more than one-third (34%) between 2001 and 2005, jumping from $3.5 billion to $4.6 [cont.]

A. You are absolutely right, and the reason is quite simple: greed and incompetency. The logic is that not helping these countries could result in worse governments taking over and coming after us, but I have one answer for that: Iraq.
