How can Africa as a continent justify growing coffee and coca for the west while people are starving?
Q. Should Africa ban all exports and expel all foreign companies and start working towards meeting the needs of its people. Is an open door policy just an invitation for western countries to steal from them. Everyone knows that in the past the western countries in the past used colonisation as the method of stealing how ever the more sophisticate way of stealing now is using companies and currency.

Q. Africans are dying of hunger and thirst. They are just skin and bones! When did suffering start in Africa and why?

A. People have been suffering since there were people. However, Africa is especially troubled. This can be traced back to European colonization and exploitation. Independence in Africa did not go well, and it has been in a state of constant political turmoil (which precludes any sort of widespread economic or social success) ever since. Political corruptions makes it especially difficult for food to reach the hungry. Rapid population growth is also burdensome. There may be enough food to feed the hungry in the world. But were it to reach them, they would simply have more children -- who would them go hungry again. As long as populations continue to grow, people will continue to be miserable. Due to the legacy of colonization, Africa… [cont.]

A. Blaming it on colonization ignores the fact that diseases have always existed. I don't recall Diamond blaming disease on colonization. If he did, he would greatly reduce his credibility. Where he did mention it, it was about the white people not being able to take tropical diseases. The disease problem in Africa doesn't involve whites or colonists.

How is Africa trying to stop the Somalian Pirates?
Q. Whats with only NATO stopping the pirates. I have done major reasearch on the current event on pirates and have not found any articles about Africa helping. If anyone finds any articles about Africa helping or not helping enough please leave the articles web address.
Asked by heinodj - Mon Apr 20 19:18:58 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Kenya is providing the venue for prosecuting the pirates. Looking at a map of Somalia, the country is practically all coastline. There aren't really any African nations near it. Kenya and Eritrea, but their navies are quite small, mostly consisting of patrol boats. Ethiopia has no coast. Djibouti has its own issues, but provides bases for the US and other countries. That's pretty much it. The European countries and the US have economic interests, such as owning the tankers and ships sailing though the area.

Is South Africa socially and economically better, worse, or the same after Apartheid?
Q. After the end of Apartheid in South Africa, and since blacks have ruled the government; is South Africa better, worse, or the same? Explain.
Asked by The Equalist - Tue Aug 28 00:06:40 2007 - - 17 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Lets talk economics. Economically South Africa has measurably suffered great losses- however, this was bound to happen. One cannot compare the country south africa is now, with apartheid south africa, there is no longer a huge population indentured by poverty and their situation to produce- this economic downturn is bound to happen whilst South Africa migrates from an agrarian virtually slave-based labour force to more automated systems of labour. I believe it is a matter of growing pains, with the alleviation of slavery and massive social reform, comes decades of unrest and the surfacing of hatreds both modern and ancient. Though this is unfortunate, it is an inevitability, whilst apartheid, economically speaking, worked, so did slavery… [cont.]

A. It is a total scam ... please read below from CBS News "In recent weeks, an e-mail plea has blanketed the Internet, similar to a classified advertisement that has appeared in newspapers all over the country, offering high-end pedigreed puppies for bargain basement prices $200 for a Yorkshire Terrier that would normally sell for up to 10 times the price. The e-mail pleas and classifieds say that the author is a dog breeder who is on a religious mission in Africa and needs to unload the puppies to good homes as soon as possible. Those interested are told to send their money (to cover shipping and handling) to an address in Nigeria and the dogs would arrive in several weeks. Not surprisingly, the puppies never arrive."

What are the best places to sightsee in Africa?
Q. I am going to volunteer in South Africa in a year and I want to see all the highlights that Africa has to offer as this will probably be my only time in that area. If you had to pick the best, coolest, must see sights in South Africa, Kenya, and other areas there what are they ? Also,is it expensive to rent a hotel for 6 months or so in South Africa (with a Western bathroom) that is decent but still maintains that African feeling (no big hotel chains, possibly a local hotel )? Thanks for any information you can offer. It is appreciated.

A. The best way to help others is to be a good example of independent success, if you give African people money, food, etc. then that's HOW they get it from now on...You are not helping them, you are helping a parasitic political organization to spread propaganda... Why would they improve their position when you are sending all this help? They've already got it made! The best way to help these people is to let them discover what they can accomplish on their own...Or, if they are destined to suffer for their whole lives, then let them die quickly instead of stretching it out over years and years. YOU DON'T know these people...When you set out to help them you are only doing it to feel better about your status as a capitalist...a politic that… [cont.]

A. Political questions are always so sensitive and I will answer as diplomatically as I can. I don't think people without any first hand experience, or those who are extremely negative should add much input to this question. I am a proudly South African woman, of mixed race. People of mixed race can also say that they have it tough, being in between black and white. They, too, say they are discriminated against, worse than any white, or black person. You then get the large Indian population, who will also claim the same.People, no matter who/what they are, tend to sometimes wear discrimination / crime / apartheid/ colour / political problems/ history, like a badge and use it, when convenient, as an excuse for their own hardships and… [cont.]

How would africa be like if it were colonized by the chinese?
Q. When the chinese first came to africa they gave the natives gifts, as a sign of respect, but when the european arrived, they enslaved them.
Asked by Lord Pandamonium - Mon May 4 08:59:05 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Actually, the Africans enslaved each other and then sold their brother's to the Europeans. Slavery was exploited and globalized by the Europeans, but it was part of African society already by that time. Speaking from my own experiences, China would have sent tens of thousands of Chinese to Africa and would have taken over the running of the continent. They would then create a false history in which Africa was always a part of China and would punish anybody who didn't accept it. Eventually the Africans would be an ethnic minority on their own continent and would be little better than slaves. Only the Africans who acted like they were Chinese would be allowed to advance in society. The rest would be doomed to be farmers or factory workers… [cont.]

How did the French imperialism of North and West Africa affect both areas?
Q. I am doing a project on French imperialism in North and West Africa and we need to know things about France such as: reasons for desire to control the area, method of establishing control, advantages/disadvantages that resulted from this take over, and the overall outcome in relation to France. Also, we need information about the conquered areas such as: changes that were made and benefits (or lack of) received. I am having some trouble finding information so any help would be great. A good website would even help.

A. Alexis B is quite wrong. French imperialism affected North and West Africa in many ways. (and not because my mom told them to either, quite frankly she wasn't alive then) Mainly though, there was a poor outcome so any good that might have happened, was eventually reversed by the African territories declaring their freedom.
