Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. Extreme poverty is the most severe state of poverty. Many cannot meet basic needs for food, water, shelter, sanitation, and health care. To determine the affected population, the World Bank defines extreme poverty as living on less than USD $1.25 per day (adjusted for PPP). The World Bank estimates that 1.4 billion people currently live under these conditions. In 1996, the following definition taken from Joseph Wresinski, founder of ATD Fourth World was taken up by the UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Despouy Report on Human Rights and Extreme Poverty s:The Despouy Report on Human Rights and Extreme Poverty.
The eradication of extreme poverty and hunger was the first Millennium Development Goal, as set by 179 United Nations Member States in 2000. Economists and activists consider epidemic diseases (AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis) as crucial factors in and consequences of extreme poverty. Extreme poverty is most common in Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia. The proportion of people in extreme poverty fell from 59 to 19 percent during the 20th century and is now the lowest in history. Asked by unknown - Thu Sep 28 09:02:14 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. By what standards? I work in poverty programs in the US, and here abject poverty is living like wealthy people in many places around the world. If you use the extreme poverty definition of not adequate shelter, food, water or clothing, on a daily basis, it is a really big number. Out of six billion people, probably three billion meet that definition. Horrific fact, that our well to do nations tend to ignore. Q. Would you give 1/2 of a percent of your income to a program to reduce extreme poverty by half in poor nations? Asked by meg - Tue Apr 22 03:24:43 2008 - - 18 Answers - 0 Comments A. According to my rough calculations...1/2 of 1 percent of the Gross National Product comes to about 125 billion dollars. Knock off at least 20% for administrative overhead and that gives you about 100 billion dollars. There is about 300 billion people in the world. So lets assume that 10% are living in extreme poverty (that is probably a low guess). So you have 30 billion poor people splitting 100 billion dollars. That comes out to about 3 dollars and 33 cents per year per person. I don't think that 1/2 of 1% of everyones income is gonna save em.
